Birds and bees

They told us
during the adoption course
That this day would come,
That our children would ask us.
I imagined I needed to be prepared
by the time they’d turn 8 or 9.
I was not prepared at all today
when my four year old son
while watching a cartoon about planes
asked me all of the sudden:
“Mom, who made us?”
Shouldn’t this be the phase
of cars and planes
instead of birds and bees?
